Cindy's musical career began as a small child, growing up back stage with her maternal Grandfather and Uncle. She would learn to operate sound and light boards, working with some of the biggest names in stage, film and music.
She had the ability early on, to imitate the voices of cartoon characters as well as movie stars and famous singers. By age 9, she was totally hooked on Streisand's voice. She began honing her vocal skills to Barbra's. Performing in recitals as early as first grade, Cindy would continue to be the selected soloist in choir, church and school productions, through out her scholastic years.
By age 14, she would begin her private training in classical voice with world renowned Bettye Gardner of Houston Grand Opera and The Alley Theatre. By the ninth grade, Cindy had become the favorite to win the U.I.L. and State competitions in solo voice for her school. She went on to win 3 gold medals in solo voice competition in Italian and French Arias. This would distinguish Cindy from her peers, as the only student in her high school to achieve this honor. During this time, Cindy began going to auditions for musicals in Houston. At 15, Cindy was among the youngest to be cast out of a thousand + in the open call. She would go on to share the stage with the legendary Howard Keel, as well as others with productions in Fondren Street Theater and world famous Theater Under The Stars ( TUTS ).
Although still in high school, Cindy received scholarships in voice and music, from 3 of the nations top schools. These were; The University Of Texas @ Austin, Sam Houston State University and Columbia Conservatory of Music. She was also accepted to The Manhattan School of Music in New York City. After weighing her options, she decided to study abroad in England.
In the coming years, Cindy sang lead and played Congas and Timbali's in the number 1 and 2 bands of Houston, touring The States and Mexico. Sought after by the best bands around, she would often work 7 nights a week between her own band and subbing for other singers.
In 1991, Cindy was approached to perform in a talent contest. Winning the contest took her to Las Vegas, where she moved and started singing in the Gay clubs. Soon, she began working with Legends In Concert. As she got older her physical likeness made the transformation to Barbra easily attainable. Cindy's natural ability, quality, six octave range, amazing breath control, pitch and technique, has so often had people accuse her of "lip-syncing". By 1994 she was cast as Barbra Streisand in Legends Live @ The Copa in Puerto Rico, where she starred for six months, followed by another two year engagement with the venue.
Cindy has been on radio shows, fashion shows and seen on television, newspapers, magazines, posters and billboards through-out The States, Asia, Latin America and Europe. One of her most recent television appearances was on CNN Istanbul as an invited guest, where she was interviewed and sang acapella to the delight of the host and studio audience. One of Cindy's favorite television appearances, was in Athens, Greece, where in 2004 she was asked to perform (as Barbra Streisand) on Greece's #1 show "Fame Story"- Greece's answer to American Idol. Days later while shopping in Athens, she was approached by several people at different times, exclaiming " You're Cindy Harrelson. I saw you on Fame Story. You are incredible!"
After performing Streisand in over 23 countries, Cindy returned to "Berlin with Stars In Concert" for a successful run from September 6th through December 31st 2006. After that, she stayed on to perform in "All That Swing" through the run of the show in late January 2007. Since then, Barbra Streisand has recently performed in Berlin, Germany for her very first concert ever, and to a sold out audience, Cindy is returning to Berlin, for the 10 year anniversary Gala in September. |
